Mirrored Worlds is an exhibition of contemporary image making, featuring works by photographers and video artists whose work is in dialogue with urban cultural appropriation in place.  The exhibition opened in October 2024 at the Macau University of Science and Technology Art Gallery and now is being launched here in Melbourne. The exhibition explores the mirroring of diverse cultures in the cities of Macau and Melbourne and is a conversation about appropriation between the two cities.

Taking inspiration from Macau’s diverse and bizarre urban landscape, a city that is not one place, but ‘every place’ a result of the city’s ambition to become a hub for leisure and entertainment. Reflecting on two vastly different, yet similar cities, Macau/澳門, also known as the ‘Las Vegas of Asia’ is a city located in southern China, under Portuguese colonisation for over 400 years until the 1999 handover to China, whilst Melbourne / Naarm, the second largest city in Australia has a deeply contested history of place. Originally inhabited by the Wurrundjeri people, the city grew rapidly, a result of colonisation from the UK and migration from many other nations. The artists selected for this exhibition responded to these themes and were selected from post graduate course work and research programs from RMIT School of Art and MUST Faculty of Humanities and Arts.
