Flavours of Glenroy (2013-4)

The Flavours of Glenroy (2013-4) was a socially engaged public art project in the northern suburb of Glenroy, Melbourne. Using Mobile Edible Gardens, collaborating artists Rowena Booth, Shane Hulbert and I took to the streets of Glenroy to connect the community through art, gardening and conversation.  In May 2013, we spent the day speaking to Glenroy locals and engaging with the community around our interventionist garden beds, which were built from materials sourced locally. The new immigrant nature of the Glenroy community became reflected in the project, as the materials sourced often reflected the dynamics of the ‘global in the local’, an installation that reflected the many cultures evident in the neighbourhood. The Glenroy Harmonisers, a local community group performed as well, along with our partners Scope, who assisted in growing our plants.

In 2014, we were invited to host The Great Mobile Edible Garden Race at The Glenroy Festival. We had an amazing day full of playfulness and competitiveness, bringing together the community over an art project, which encouraged locals to consider sustainability through the connection to the food we grow and eat.

The Flavours of Glenroy was funded and supported by Moreland City Council's Celebrating Place Grant.
